Personal security precautions
• Being alert to your surroundings, especially at night, or in an unknown or isolated area is always a good defense. Walk like you belong in the area with head up and maintaining eye contact with anyone walking past. Don’t look scared or act nervous.
• If you don’t feel safe, leave. It is better to be safe than sorry. If you are meeting someone, go to a safe area and call them to cancel or change locations.
• Always have your keys ready whether you are about to enter your car or home. Buy a security whistle for your key change that you can easily use if you feel threatened by someone or are actually being attacked.
• Don’t be embarrassed to call for help. If you know it’s necessary, yelling “call the police” or “Call 911, I’m being attacked” is a good way to bring attention to a dangerous situation.
• Make sure your hands aren’t full when loading or unloading the car. Having hands full makes you more susceptible to an attack. Bring more than one load to the car if at home and use a shopping cart for packages if at a store.
• Avoid going home if you think you are being followed not matter if you are on foot or driving. Go to a public place, such as a store or restaurant. If necessary, go directly to the home of a neighbor you know or if possible directly to a friend’s house. Whether the location is private or publice, immediately call the police. Of course, if you know the location of a police station that is close by, go there.
• Try not to use an ATM machine at night or in a place where you feel unsafe. Be sure the ATM is visible to the public and if at night, also well lit. If you feel you are taking a chance with your safety, go to an ATM machine at a safer location.
• Always keep your purse tucked under your arm, even if it has a shoulder strap. If someone attempts to snatch it, let it go. You don’t want antagonize a thief who may attack you physically and you don’t want the risk of falling while the thief struggles for your purse.
• When approaching a parking lot or an area that is isolated, try to go with someone. If not possible, stay alert to your surroundings and be aware of possible ways to flee to a more secure or public area. Be wary of anyone approaching you, especially if you and they are near your car.
• Try not to walk or drive home the same way every day.
Never resist if you are being mugged. Property and money are not worth injury or your life.
• Making sure your home is safe and secure:
• Make sure all entrances to your home are well lit. If you park your car outside whenever you are home, try to make sure you park in a well lit area.
• Make sure all windows and doors are well locked, using dead bolts when possible. Never leave any extra keys outside. No matter how clever you think the hiding place, chances are a burglar will find it.
• When leaving town, make sure you have stopped mail and newspaper deliveries. At timer that turns on lights and TV or radio while away especially if leaving town or arriving home after dark is a good deterrent to burglars.
• Make sure you have a peep hole in your door to use to see who is at the door. Otherwise, ask who is at the door before opening it. If you are not expecting anyone, do not open the door. Of course, always offer to call for a stranger if one comes to your door asking to use the phone. Never let a stranger in.
• Make sure you don’t give personal information to a stranger over the phone. When in a public place, try not to give any personal information over the cell phone. Make sure your conversation is private if you have to.
• If you must put a name on a mail box, use only your last name. Either use either a first initial for your first name in any phone directory or don’t have your address listed. Never leave a message on your voice mail that states you are leaving town or will be away from home for a particular period of time (such as a hospital stay.)
• Make sure you know who you can trust in an emergency in your neighborhood.
