Personal Safety Tips: Preparing for your pets in case of disasters
One never knows when disaster will strike, even if you live in what you believe to be a “safe” part of the country. Thus, not only is it is prudent to know how to take care of your family in such a situation, but also for your most vulnerable member of your family: your pets. Be sure you are prepared in the event of disaster that causes the evacuation of your home:
Most emergency agencies and shelters, such as the Red Cross and other shelters do allow pets to be taken with you or accept them in your absence. Make sure you know of any animal oriented facility such as a boarding facility, veterinarians, or pet shelter that is equipped to take pets in emergencies. Also know which friends, relatives or neighbors can care for your pets. Even knowing which motels or hotels allow for pets is good planning.
Just as with your family, make sure you have a disaster kit for your pet that includes any medications, copies of medical records and first aid kit, food, drinking water, bowls, can opener, a favorite toy or two. If you have a cat make sure to include cat litter and a pan!
• Make sure you have proper leashes or enough carriers for keep your pets safe.
Be sure to have current photos (in case they get lost), and care information, long with the number for your pet’s vet, as them may have to stay at separate facility.
• Be sure your pet has identifiers such as tags or chips.
• Make sure everyone knows what to do in case of a disaster, including how to secure your pets quickly and safely. Make sure these steps are followed whether immediately after a disaster hits such as an earthquake or if you have time to prepare such as a hurricane or other violent storm.
• Pets panic and stress during disasters, too, so make sure that any leashes are strong and secured and that any pet carriers will confine your animal safely. If on a leash, make sure someone is holding onto the animal at all times if possible.
For more exotic or special care pets such as birds, reptiles and amphibians, be sure that they have the proper carrier, as well as the food, and special equipment (like warmers) that they would need during normal times.
