Personal Safety Tips: Making sure your children are safe

Responsible parents are always mindful of their children safety and security. It is important they know what to do in case of any emergency or threat to their safety. • Make sure your children are safe and prepared for emergencies in the home:
Teach your children what to do in case of fire, and conduct fire escape drills
Make sure emergency numbers are well posted and train them what to say when making calls to each number (what to say to police vs. the fire department vs. medical emergency personnel, etc.)

• Make sure your home has a both fire and carbon monoxide alarms. Make sure your children know the signs of carbon monoxide poisoning just in case. Make sure they know to leave the home immediately if they are old enough to be left home alone. Knowing how to turn off the source of the carbon monoxide poisoning does not ensure their safety.

• Make sure they have a route from school that is safe. That includes knowing who to go to in case of emergency or threats from strangers.
If your children are responsible and old enough to be left home alone, make sure they know how to answer the door properly if a stranger comes to the home.

• Make sure your children know how to react to strangers. Make sure your children know how to react to strangers, especially if they are offering gifts or claiming to pick them up because you had some sort of emergency.

• If your child is old enough to cook, make sure they know the proper ways to cook and what to do in an emergency. (For example, never use water to put out a grease fire.)
